About this feature

In this Community Chest interview, Dominik speaks with Eric Burgess about the Great Yarmouth Christian Youth Group's cultural and humanitarian trips to Ukraine. Burgess describes providing aid to orphanages and children's prisons, the etymology of the town Zolotonosha, and how listeners can contribute clothing, medical equipment, or funds via the International Aid Trust.

In this interview from the programme Community Chest, Dominik speaks with Eric Burgess, a lecturer in construction and civil engineering at City College Norwich. Burgess discusses his role running the Great Yarmouth Christian Youth Group and his organisation of cultural visits to Ukraine for teenagers. He explains how the group provides humanitarian aid, including food, clothing, and medical supplies, to schools, orphanages, and children's prisons, working with the International Aid Trust for funding and shipping. Burgess first visited Ukraine in 1998 and has taken youth club members annually for the last four years.

This prison is like a juvenile delinquent institution. Yeah, it's well because they have a large alcohol problem over there and lots of orphans on the streets. If you don't join one of the street gangs, then as a child you probably won't survive because in the winter the temperatures can drop to about minus 30.

But they are constantly so willing to give without any thought to their own needs, and this is what I try and encourage. This is what I try and live myself, and encourage my teenagers to do the same: to give without.
